We believe all residents of Traverse City should be treated fairly and equally. This ordinance has been in place for a year and simply protects gay and transgender people with regards to housing and employment in the same way that it already protects people from discrimination based on their race, sex, religion, and many other attributes.
More than 18 cities in Michigan, including Ann Arbor, Grand Rapids, Lansing, Detroit, and Saginaw, have non-discrimination laws that protect gay and transgender people. There is nothing new or radical about keeping this the case in Traverse City.
The Citizens of Traverse City have a tremendous opportunity to stand up for equality. It is the latest city to stand up and support equality for all. On November 8, 2011 voters will decide the future of equality for each citizen, and allow we the people, of Traverse City, to unite as a community.
